Barrique
is the word used in Bordeaux for barrel.
Indeed,
the volume varies from one region to another because
of tradition and long local history of winemaking.
In
Bordeaux, a barrique contains 225 liters (60 US gallons).
In
Burgundy, it is 228 liters and is called a "piece" while
in the Loire Valley it is 232 liters.
Tonneau
is another word used for barrel. In Bordeaux a "tonneau"
contains 900 liters and means 4 barriques.
